Back when I was 15 and TikTok was more about making videos with friends, many people were watching the videos bullying me. Throughout my teenage life, I struggled with my weight. My best friend and I made TikTok dancing videos and we always posted them to get TikTok “famous” but I felt that in all the videos she posted I looked “fat” or “bad”. I began to find all the embarrassing videos of her and posted them. We started to fight badly until she began to write awful and commented on them so the world could see. We continued to fight for days. We Dragged other friends into it to pick sides but if we were face to face having this conversation/fight I know we would have agreed to not post certain videos. I know we would have not said half the stuff we said.
Does the internet make friendships end? We always agreed on everything in person and never fought. I felt the popularity of how the internet made us feel overtook our friendship. Why did I feel so wrong about myself in the videos? Even though we had lots of fun making them we both knew we would post them so the whole fight on the internet would have been so different if it was in person. In person, you can talk about it before you do but on the internet, the actions that take place are mostly because people don’t think before they act. But as time went on my TikTok feed was only showing the drama and I felt that’s all TikTok started to become and why we kept feeding into the drama because most people on TikTok that got a lot of views and were “famous” were telling stories to have their own drama experiences with friends. The internet is a whole different world and really can change the way someone looks at someone, thinks about someone, and acts toward someone because it’s all about being the top, best, and most popular. Even though we made the videos I feel the world of TikTok was encouraging bad things to make it worse.
Is there a reason why social media causes so much drama compared to face-to-face? Is it easier online to attack someone you care about compared to in person? Does social media make people more popular by sharing drama stories? Why do online chat rooms tend to hurt people more than just normal texting?
